Trump Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' by Executive Order — And Threatens the Atlantic Is Next

Two days after Canada announced retaliatory tariffs, Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario — a lake that is more than half Canadian territory — 'Lake America' on all official US maps and documents. Canadian PM Mark Carney's response: 'It was, is, and always will be Lake Ontario.' Trump then threatened to rename the Atlantic or Pacific, 'maybe both.' The move converts a tariff dispute into a sovereignty dispute — and sovereignty disputes are not resolved by adjusting tariff rates.

Trump Announces 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos, Trucks, Parts, and Steel — Effective January 2027

Trump posted on Truth Social on August 24 that all Canadian autos, trucks, auto parts, and steel will face 50% tariffs starting January 1, 2027. The exemption: 'Make it in the USA — zero tariff.' He added that Canada 'will no longer be treated like a state' and declared 'we don't need Canada, but Canada needs us.' The auto announcement is a separate and larger escalation than the August 22 tariffs on wine, furniture, and dairy — Canada and the US share one of the most integrated auto supply chains in the world.

US-Canada Trade War Breaks Open: 50% Tariffs Active, Carney Says 'At War,' Retaliation Set for Sept 8

US-Canada trade talks collapsed on August 21. The US began imposing tariffs of up to 50% on $20 billion of Canadian goods — wine, furniture, dairy, cement, clothing — on August 22. Trump followed with a Truth Social post calling Canada a country that 'wants state benefits without being a state.' Canada PM Mark Carney declared the two countries 'at war' and announced retaliatory tariffs on US steel, dairy, appliances, farm machinery, and electronics, effective September 8. The US's largest trading partner relationship is now in open bilateral conflict.
